These days, one of the most popular neighborhoods among sophisticated travelers in Seoul is Seochon.
It’s a uniquely charming area where traditional hanok houses stand side by side with stylish, modern cafés.

Located just a short walk from Gyeongbokgung Palace and Gwanghwamun, Seochon is easy to add to your sightseeing route. Here’s a guide to the latest must-visit spots in this beautiful neighborhood.

What Is Seochon?4d64a2f0675f7.png

“Seochon” (서촌) literally means “West Village.”
It was named for its location west of Seoul’s iconic Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Historically home to royal family members and artists, Seochon still preserves much of its old-world charm. Compared to Bukchon, Seochon feels more relaxed and local — less touristic, more lived-in.

It’s also only about 15–20 minutes by bus or subway from Gwangjang Market, making it easy to combine with other sightseeing spots.

Seochon vs. Seongsu - A Different Kind of Trend

Seongsu is known for factory renovations and cutting-edge trends.
Seochon, on the other hand, blends tradition and modern sensibility.

You’ll find renovated traditional homes turned into galleries, carefully curated boutiques, and calm cafés tucked into quiet alleyways.
Step off the main street and you’ll discover maze-like backstreets where time seems to slow down — perfect for escaping the crowds.

Gwanghwamun Square feels like a refreshing open space in the heart of Seoul.
You’ll find the statue of King Sejong the Great, creator of Hangul. Behind the statue is an underground exhibition hall (Sejong Story) where you can learn about the origins of the Korean alphabet.

Understanding Hangul’s history might make Seoul’s street signs look a little different afterward.
