When planning a trip to Korea, one of the first questions travelers often ask is: โ€œWhich transportation card should I get?โ€

ย Knowing the different card types in advance makes your journey smoother and more convenient. Hereโ€™s a complete guide to help you understand each cardโ€™s features, differences, and how to choose the best one for your trip.

๐Ÿ’ณ Main Types of Transportation Cards

Card

Features

T-money Card

Usable nationwide (especially in Seoul). Koreaโ€™s most common transportation card. Works for subways, buses, and taxis.ย

Also accepted in convenience stores and some shops.

EZL Card

Commonly used in the Busan region. Offers the same features as T-money.

Rail+ Card

Usable nationwide, issued by Korail (Korea Railroad Corporation). Works for subways, buses, and trainsโ€”including KTX, Koreaโ€™s high-speed rail.

๐Ÿš‰ What is the NAMANE Card? How Is It Different from T-money?

In recent years, new multi-function cards have emergedโ€”offering not only transportation but also payment features for shopping. Letโ€™s compare T-money and NAMANE Card side by side:

Card

Functions

T-money Card

Transportation payment only

NAMANE Card

Includes Rail+ transport, prepaid credit function, and balance transfer between accounts

The NAMANE Card is a prepaid card designed for international travelers. It supports both transportation and general payments such as shopping, cafรฉs, and restaurants.
By contrast, T-money is a transportation-only card. It cannot be used for regular retail payments.
In short, T-money is transit-focused, while NAMANE Card is an all-in-one solution that covers transportation + shopping in a single card.

Similar multi-function cards include WOWPASS, which offers comparable features.

๐Ÿ’ก Can You Use a Credit Card or Smartphone Instead?

โ–ช๏ธ Credit Cards

Most foreign credit cards cannot be used directly at subway or bus gates in Korea. Even if your card supports contactless payment (like VISA or Mastercard ), it may not work on Korean public transport.

To travel smoothly, itโ€™s best to prepare a transportation IC card such as T-money or NAMANE in advance.

โ–ช๏ธ Smartphones

In Korea, services like Kakao Pay and Samsung Pay allow mobile transport paymentsโ€”but for travelers from Japan or other countries, these often donโ€™t work due to app or regional limitations.
Since July 2025, T-money can be added to iPhones; however, recharging is still limited to subway ticket machines or convenience stores, and not all machines support iPhone charging yet.

ย For now, itโ€™s easiest and most reliable to get a physical transportation card.

๐Ÿš† Are There Unlimited Ride Passes?

Yes! Korea offers a โ€œClimate Companion Cardโ€ (๊ธฐํ›„๋™ํ–‰์นด๋“œ), a daily unlimited ride pass within Seoul.
- 1-Day Pass: 5,000 KRW
- 2-Day Pass: 8,000 KRW
- 3-Day Pass: 10,000 KRW, and more depending on duration.

However, this card has some restrictions:
- Itโ€™s valid only within Seoul city.
- Not usable from Incheon Airport, or on certain express buses and lines like Shinbundang Line.
ย For short stays, recharging a transportation card with the needed amount is usually more convenient.

๐ŸŽซ NAMANE PASS โ€” Unlimited Travel + Convenience!

The NAMANE PASS is a special IC card that allows unlimited use of public transportย during your chosen period.
You can pick it up 24 hours a day at CU convenience stores in Incheon Airportย right after you land.
It covers subways, buses, taxis, and even AREX trainsโ€”so you can use it for your airport transfer immediately after arrival!

๐Ÿ’ต What If You Donโ€™t Have a Card?

You can still buy single-ride tickets using cash at subway stations.
However, transportation cards are cheaper and more efficient: you save about 100 KRW per trip and enjoy transfer discounts between subways and buses.
Using a card means less hassle and more savings.
